Jerusalem is Proud to present
Australian Premiere with discussion forum featuring Tobin Saunders and Rodney Croome
Friday the 21st 6.30pm
Kino Cinemas
Tiks: www.hraff.org.au 8352 4434
Review from Variety the Showbiz bible:
'Plans to hold 2006's World Pride celebration and march in Jerusalem are met with political and religious opposition in "Jerusalem Is Proud to Present."
Dramatic conflict pits the city's tolerance-oriented Open House against fundamentalist and superstitious critics who fear potential "homosexualization of the Middle East."
DV-shot docu, which won the nonfiction prize at Outfest, makes no effort to educate the narrow-minded; instead, it serves gay-friendly auds worldwide as a record of unfair treatment. With the right publicity, hot-button pic could ignite enough interest for a modest theatrical run.
Though the demonstration (which promised to avoid the "nudity and provocation" of other international gay-pride gatherings) was to be more symbolic than anything, the event's opponents far outnumbered its passionate organizers, forcing compromises through threats of physical violence.
A silent witness throughout the uphill planning process, director Nitzan Gilady presents an insider's view of the many obstacles faced, from city hall, where Jerusalem's mayor and conservative council refuse to acknowledge any discussion, to the streets, where agitprop pamplets and actual rioting lead local police to revoke their support.
It's blood-boiling stuff, offset by encouraging signs of progress in some corners.
Winner of the Outstanding Documentary Feature award at the 2007 Outfest: Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.'

Sex Spirits and Sorcery and Turn the Beat Around

Sex, Spirits and Sorcery
"The artists of Injalak Arts and Crafts in western Arnhem Land's steaning climes, the Dreamtime is a passionate mix of lust, revenge and magic. Coffee Capers
COFFEE CAPERSLooks inviting doesn't it! Yep like most people of western society I NEED my coffee. Every day that I remember, I've taken my early morning trip to the cafe (usually Bevande, Windsor). It is so much part of my ritual, my day, the raison d'etre of my existence ! (Well almost!)
I have a Chinese flat mate. When I say Chinese I mean Chinese not Chinese Australian, and like most things, he doesn't understand what I do at all ! It's all very foreign to him.
However in parts of South East Asia coffee is very much part of their lives. My BEST coffee experience ever was in LAOS. Yes LAOS. Once part of Indo-China the French brought coffee and coissants to this country and they're never left.
I'll never forget one memorable morning when the guesthouse served up this wonderful brew. They use this wire type net to strain the coffee through. Of course while I was there I bought the sieve and the coffee and tried it at home. ATLAS it's not the same ! AND I can't get Laos coffee here I have to go the central market in ADELAIDE !
I dream of going back to LAOS for many reasons, not least the wonderful people and their innocent ways, but also for the coffee experience. BRING IT ON !
What's your great coffee experiences? Go on make a comment and tell us all.

Me and Dewey

ME AND DEWEY
Yes I have my strange ways but I don't think I'm the only dude who likes to hang out in the library. I love libraries particularly those that are architectually pleasing that are a joy to dwell within.
Some of the best libraries I've ever come across are in little old New Zealand. There's one in a quiet outlying suburb of Christchurch which overlooks the ocean. The view is stunning and you would never know about it unless you came across it by pure accident.
Of course nothing can surpass our great State Library here in Melbourne town. I love the way it combines art gallery spaces, museum items with books and journals.
If you look for me among the stacks you will probably find me at:
781 History of music
These books are pretty cool. The University of Melbourne Baillieu's music library is a great resource !
388.4 Overseas public transport systems
I know you all now think i'm one of those weird trainspotter types BUT I'M NOT !!!!
Here you can read about the PT miracles round the world. Did you know that in Bogota, Columbia and Curitiba, Brazil whole swathes of road space have been reclaimed and cheap, effective and fast busways put in place alongside some beautiful new parks. Also in the home of the freeway LA now has some great underground rail lines to all the great tourist sights. If it can work there it can work here too !
417.7 History of Language
Yes I've never been sooooo happy the day i discovered the language tree ! So many mysteries so many dialects. Did you know that Hungarian and Finnish are linguistically similar though they are locate in totally different parts of Europe? AND that Khmer from Cambodia is more like the languages of India than its' neighbours in Thaliand or Vietnam ? How did that happen?
Yep the library can keep me in endless wondrous amusement for hours on end !
AND the dewey system is waiting for you ! So go ahead take a number and go for your imaginery trip !
